An overhang is the portion of the roof that runs past the wall providing coverage for the space around the foundation of your shed. If the gable overhang is to resist wind loads properly it must either be designed or constructed in accordance with some pre engineered prescriptive detail. If the roof overhang is not big enough then the only way to protect these windows doors and entryways is by recessing them into the thick exterior wall or by installing special casing and flashing for each door or entryway. Eave overhangs shall not exceed 24 inches 610 mm measured horizontally.

Does this include drip edges that protrude or rain gutters or is it just the wood structure. Some slight overhang is recommended in conjunction with a drip edge flashing to prevent water from getting under the roofing and onto underlying wood. This method is less wind resistant and in literature is limited to a 12 overhang. Roof overhangs can extend farther than 2 feet but beyond this length they begin to lose structural integrity and require external supports. A typical metal roof overhang may be 2 to 4 inches or even less. Metal is usually installed on rafters or strip sheathing rather than the solid decking used under other materials.
