Avoid opening or closing your garage door if you can after noticing any of the above. When closing the garage door lower it slowly and manually lock it by sliding the lock bar. Locate the emergency cord on the overhead track of your garage door opener. The latter option is the most common.

The door appears crooked dented or damaged. To close your garage door manually you will need to follow a few simple steps. Once you are done maneuvering your garage door and are ready to re engage the automatic door opener please return the garage door back to the down position. The release cord is on the carriage connecting the door opener arm to the opener track.

Manually move the garage door and return to down position step 2 will allow you to freely move the garage door open and close. If you are having trouble reaching the lever you can use a broom handle or similar object to help you access it. It should click in place. To manually open most garage doors you simply pull a corded handle that is attached to the door. Pull the emergency release cord to free the garage door from the door opener if the springs and cable are in good condition.

To reset it begin by pulling the cord in the opposite direction. You can t manually open the garage door. There is a delay when the door responds to the remote. When you pull down on the rope the carriage releases from the base and you can operate the door manually.

Do this by pushing upward on the release lever until you hear a slight click.
